What Are Laminates Made Of?
With the growing popularity of laminate floors in New Zealand, many kiwis are asking what is the stuff actually made out of. Let’s take a closer look.
Is it wood or plastic?
The interesting thing about it is, it's neither! Laminate is a multi-layer synthetic flooring product fused together with a lamination process. Laminate flooring simulates wood with a photographic applique layer under a clear protective layer. The inner core layer is usually composed of melamine resin and fibreboard materials. Laminates are constructed of four distinct layers:
Back layer: The bottom layer of quality laminate floors are responsible for keeping the plank straight and softening the contact with the surface. Most quality laminate floors use a foamy underlay, which keeps the floors warm and prevent squeaking.
Core layer: This is the majority of the plank. It is made of high-density fibreboard combined with wax and resin binder, which protects the floor from moisture. The edges of the boards form an accurate click pattern used by installers to easily assemble the product.
Decorative layer: This layer gives the floor its distinct appearance. More quality laminate floors have three dimensional groves here, which give the floors a modern wood look.
Wear layer: This layer is responsible for giving laminate floors it’s durability. Floors such as the German Krono brand, use a special synthetic resin-treated cellulose that are 2nd in durability only to diamonds. This assures the floors can comply with a 20 year guarantee. It also acts as an anti-bacterial coating, making it perfect for day to day living.
Is it as durable as wood?
When comparing laminates to wood, the main thing to consider is upkeep. With wood floors, there is always the option of sanding down a layer to restore the look of them. You cannot sand down laminate floors. Laminates on the other hand, are much tougher than wood floors. The material is significantly more durable and can last 25+ years with proper treatment.
The appeal of laminate floors compared to wood is that it is a fraction of the cost of wood floors, being even more durable.
